Lonnie grew up in the Western part of Albemarle County, and has long been involved in local conservation issues. He was also one of the founders of Charlottesville Earth Week and has served on many citizen advisory groups, including the Citizen's Committee on Environmental Sustainability and the Albemarle County Natural Heritage Committee, where he is currently the Chair.
